Happy Glaze Donuts will soon open in Germantown. Memphis Commercial Appeal
There’s nothing better than a warm, freshly cooked doughnut. It used to be, you’d have to get up mighty early to get a warm doughnut, as most shops bake in the wee hours of the morning for the day’s offerings.
A new doughnut shop is coming to Germantown that changes all that. Happy Glaze Donuts will make doughnuts to order.
Happy Glaze co-owner Jake Gaines said they have invested in a doughnut-making machine that can cook a batch of 12 mini-doughnuts in less than one minute.
The made-to-order doughnuts come with 12 mini-doughnuts per box. Gaines said “these delectable little treats are about 1 to 1½ inches each.”
Doughnuts come in two categories, “traditional” and “cake.” Gaines said these doughnuts are more in the cake category, but they are lighter and fluffier than a classic cake doughnut. “Think beignets,” he said, explaining the texture and sweet flavor will remind you of this New Orleans treat.
The doughnuts will be decorated to order as well, with 14 to 15 flavors from which to choose.
Gaines said his sister-in-law, Krissy Johnson, came up with their signature “happy glaze.” Johnson had a cupcake business, and this homemade cream cheese glaze was originally a cupcake icing.
Johnson worked with Gaines to come up with some classic flavors like chocolate sprinkles and chocolate glazed, as well as some unique toppings like peanut butter and jelly, maple bacon and Fruity Pebbles.
Johnson and her husband, Tim, are also partners in the new doughnut shop with Gaines.
“I have been a doughnut fan my whole life,” Gaines said. “I was always interested in doughnut shops and would try out places when I traveled.”
On his travels, he discovered this new doughnut concept. “Nashville, Huntsville and Birmingham all have these types of doughnut shops. But Memphis didn’t have anything like it.”
The new shop will open mid-May at 7781 Farmington Blvd. in Germantown. The 1,200-square-foot location was previously occupied by a Papa Murphy’s pizza restaurant. Gaines said they hope to have seating for 14 to 20.
The good news is you don’t have to wait until construction is finished to enjoy Happy Glaze doughnuts.
“The retail shop process was taking so long, we decided to invest in a food truck,” Gaines said.
The food truck will be open a few days a week in front of the new location starting the week of April 15. Check Happy Glaze’s social media pages for exact open times.
