5 months after devastating fire, Misfit Doughnuts to reopen in new space – Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

Here’s a breakdown of the stories right now at www.democratandchronicle.com. Virginia Butler, Democrat and Chronicle

On Saturday, nearly five months after an arson fire forced Misfit Doughnuts and Treats from its just-upgraded, expanded home at 976 Monroe Ave., the shop will reopen in a new space at 133 Gregory St.

“The fire was a huge loss for us,” said Jennifer Johnson, who owns the business specializing in vegan baked goods. “The fact that we had just finished a renovation — it was devastating.”

But, she said, “I’m really excited about the new space,” formerly home to Jamaican restaurant Peppapot.

At 1,350 square feet, Misfit’s South Wedge location is 500 square feet larger than its Monroe Avenue space, offers more seating and has many more personal touches.

“The previous tenants had been here for 10 years,” Johnson said, so 133 Gregory “needed more love and attention.”

Floors and walls have been replaced, and some of the mechanicals have been upgraded.

But she said, “I also wanted to make it more of exactly how I wanted it to be.”

Cosmetic improvements include paint — “yellow and bright pink and cheerful” — and the addition of a stained-glass window, custom-made by a friend.

And although Johnson doesn’t own the building, “It really feels like ours,” she said.

Saturday’s relaunch, which starts at 9 a.m., won’t be a grand opening, per se.

“Eventually, we’ll have a grand opening party and celebration with crazy little things to thank the people who helped us through this difficult time,” she said. “But for right now, I just want to be open.”

The menu will include several doughnut flavors, cinnamon fritters and a breakfast sandwich.

Regular hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, or until items sell out; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, or until sell-out; closed Monday and Tuesday.

Parking is available on Gregory and Ashland streets.
